Braces for Teens

June 19, 2021|

For many teens, braces are a rite of passage. They’re one more example of the changes adolescents go through. At Utah Orthodontic Care, our orthodontists, dentists, and staff believe orthodontic problems don’t improve with age, they just become more difficult to treat. Meaning, your child’s teenage years are typically the best time for braces and affordable orthodontic treatment.

Generally, by the age of 11-13, all the baby teeth have fallen out, the permanent teeth have come in and there is remaining jaw growth that we can take advantage of. At this time, it is best to treat problems that contribute to a bad bite, poor alignment, or excess spacing. Utah Orthodontic Care offers a range of orthodontic treatments designed specifically for adolescents like teen braces and Invisalign, and we provide orthodontic payment plans to ensure that teen braces can fit anyone’s budget!

Teen Treatment Options

During your free consultation for teen braces, our orthodontic specialists will discuss your concerns, explain our findings, and talk through the treatment options available. From there, we will develop a customized treatment plan specific to your child. We offer the following teen treatments:

  • Metal Braces: Metal braces for teens need no introduction. But, you might be surprised to find they’re smaller and lighter than ever. They also offer some customized options, like colored elastic ties on the brackets.
  • Ceramic Braces: Ceramic teen braces blend in with your teeth, making them more difficult to notice. Ceramic braces work just like metal braces but are less noticeable.
  • Invisalign Teen: Invisalign Teen is a series of removable, clear plastic aligners that gradually straighten teeth as they are worn. Formerly recommended only for adult patients, they now come with special features like compliance indicators to tell how often you’ve been wearing them. Invisalign for teens can also retain the space for teeth that haven’t erupted yet. Plus, they’re almost entirely invisible!

Every patient has different needs, therefore their treatment and the length of treatment will differ. The length of orthodontic treatment depends on you and your specific smile goals. The active stage of orthodontic treatment typically lasts 6-24 months. Afterwards, you will wear a retainer indefinitely, or at least at night when you’re sleeping.
