You Just Broke a Bracket. Now What?

August 8, 2018|

While it’s our fondest hope that every orthodontic treatment runs as smoothly as possible, your Salt Lake City area braces provider at Utah Orthodontic Care understands that sometimes accidents happen. Luckily, our team of knowledgeable and compassionate orthodontic providers are here to guide you through what you can do should you encounter such an orthodontic emergency.

What Can Lead to Broken Brackets?

While metal and ceramic braces are meant to be highly durable, there is a reason that your Greater Salt Lake area orthodontics providers at Utah Orthodontic Care suggest avoiding certain foods or activities while wearing braces. Despite their durability, braces are still susceptible to damage in certain situations. To help prevent damage to your braces, keep in mind the following:

  • Avoid eating hard, tough, or crunchy foods such as hard candy, popcorn, chips, beef jerky, corn on the cob, or apples (apples cut into small, bite-size pieces are okay).
  • Avoid sticky foods such as taffies, caramel, or gum.
  • Do not chew on hard objects, such as pencils, pen caps, or finger nails.

What Do I Do if I Have a Bracket Break?

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, emergencies just happen. Thankfully, Utah Orthodontic Care is here to help. In the event that you have a bracket break, call as soon as possible — but avoid coming straight to one of our locations. We will evaluate the situation over the phone and ensure you are seen by the appropriate orthodontic provider as quickly as possible.
