Different Components of Braces

February 15, 2021

Although your orthodontist will be able to explain any questions you may have about your braces, it’s always a good idea to research what your orthodontic treatment will entail. At Utah Orthodontic Care, we educate our patients so they understand what’s happening during the whole treatment process. We strive to ensure your first visit is a success. The main components of braces are bands, brackets, rubber bands, archwires, ligatures, coil springs, and power chains.

1. Bands

Applied by the orthodontist using dental instruments, bands go around your molars. They’re made to attach onto archwires.

2. Brackets

When applying traditional braces, brackets are usually cemented onto each tooth. These small, rectangular pieces are what hold the archwire in place. Traditional brackets usually come in silver or gold stainless steel. If you opt for ceramic braces, they can be made to match the color of your teeth.

3. Rubber bands

Rubber bands may be used to correct overbites or underbites, and are connected to brackets on both the upper and lower teeth. This will gradually move the jaw to its correct position.

4. Archwires

Archwires are a thin metal strand that attaches to each bracket and causes your teeth to move. The thicker the wire, the stronger and faster the movement of the teeth. These wires are generally switched out at each orthodontic appointment.

5. Ligatures

Ligatures are what attach the archwire to the bracket. They are tiny bands that often come in different colors. This allows patients to choose their favorite color or match their braces to an upcoming holiday!

6. Coil Springs

Coil springs are only used when there is too much overcrowding between two teeth. These fit between brackets and over the archwire, and are used to push the teeth away from each other.

7. Power Chains

Power chains are connected elastic ligatures. These are used to close space between teeth that are too far apart.
