Am I Too Old For Braces?

December 1, 2017|

You are never too old to give yourself the gift of healthy, straight teeth and a beautiful, confident smile. While the experts at Utah Orthodontic Care recommend most people begin braces treatment between the ages of 7 and 14, more and more adults are opting to try braces or Invisalign clear aligners. One in five orthodontic patients is now over the age of 18, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. The increase in adults in braces likely comes from the newest technologies that make braces affordable and more attractive.

Why Do Adults Need Braces?

Everyone knows that braces result in straight teeth and a beautiful smile that gives you confidence in a variety of well-researched ways. But braces also can remedy some health situations that may continue to affect you as an adult. Crooked or overlapping teeth can trap food and create areas where plaque can grow, causing tooth decay and gum disease that can eventually lead to bone loss over time. Over and underbites or other types of malocclusion or orthodontic problems can interfere with speech, cause problems with chewing and eating, and cause you to bite the insides of your cheeks.

What Type Of Braces Can Adults Wear?

When you visit any of the Utah Orthodontic Care offices surrounding Salt Lake City for your free consultation, our doctors will discuss the various options that you have for straightening your teeth, based on your individual situation. Braces have evolved in the last few decades. Even metal braces are now much less noticeable and work in less time than their predecessors. All of these orthodontic tools work by putting pressure on your teeth to move in the correct position. As adults, your teeth are already set into your jaw and may take more time to move. We carry several types of brace including:

  • Metal braces. These are the traditional silver metal braces and brackets that are most affordable and chosen by the majority of our patients. Using colored wires and bands can give you a bold look.
  • Ceramic braces. Made of a tooth-colored ceramic, adults often choose these braces as they are much less noticeable.
  • Invisalign clear aligners. These are also popular with adults who need more minor tooth movement. Teeth are moved using a set of custom-make clear aligner trays that you wear at least 22 of 24 hours a day, taking them out to eat. Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible during treatment.
