Interceptive Extractions in Utah

Creating the Right Conditions for a Healthy Smile

When a child’s permanent teeth begin to erupt in a crowded or misaligned arch, early intervention can make a big difference. One of the most effective and proactive treatments we offer at Utah Orthodontic Care is interceptive extraction—a targeted removal of baby or even permanent teeth to make room for proper alignment and bite development.

This strategic, growth-guided procedure is typically used during Phase I Orthodontics, before full braces are needed. By removing selected teeth at the right time, we can avoid more complicated orthodontic issues later, including impacted teeth, jaw discrepancies, or prolonged treatment in the teen years.

What Are Interceptive Extractions?

Interceptive extractions involve removing baby teeth (and in some cases, select permanent teeth) to prevent or correct dental crowding, bite problems, or misalignment. These extractions are not cosmetic or elective—they are medically recommended by an orthodontic specialist as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

At Utah Orthodontic Care, interceptive extractions are:

This preventive approach gives your child the best chance at a properly aligned smile with minimal intervention later.

The Interceptive Extraction Process

At Utah Orthodontic Care, interceptive extractions are part of a carefully managed treatment sequence. Here’s what families can expect:

  1. Orthodontic evaluation with imaging to assess tooth eruption and jaw growth
  2. Treatment planning, often in conjunction with developmental guidance and monitoring
  3. Referral for extraction to a pediatric dentist or oral surgeon
  4. Ongoing monitoring, to track alignment and determine whether appliances like holding appliances are needed
  5. Transition to next phase, whether continued observation or preparation for braces

We communicate closely with parents and referring providers every step of the way to ensure the process is safe, comfortable, and timely.

Why Early Tooth Removal Can Prevent Bigger Problems

While many parents hesitate at the idea of extraction, interceptive removal of certain teeth is a proven and conservative solution to avoid more intensive treatment later. Strategic extractions can:

  • Prevent impaction or misalignment of permanent teeth
  • Make room for proper eruption, reducing the need for brackets or headgear
  • Correct growth asymmetries in the jaws or arches
  • Shorten total time in braces or Invisalign
  • Eliminate the need for extraction of permanent teeth in the future

This is not a one-size-fits-all approach—every extraction decision is personalized to the child’s anatomy and future development.

“Great orthodontics! I got my braces at UOC and they’ve been so amazing! First appointment is free, they’ll evaluate your teeth and talk to you about braces option options and prices/ plans. My dental insurance did not cover braces for adults ( I chose not to when I made my plan ) and even if I switched my plan I don’t think it would be a nice affordable plan like UOC offered me with monthly payments … I’m happy with them! They were always nice, friendly and flexible with schedules! Recommend it 100%!”

– Denise A.

“I love this office. The doctor is fun with the kids, very friendly and approachable. The staff is typically very easy to work with and any time we have any question or concern they have been quick to make it right with us. We had a billing hiccup and Lauren was incredibly understanding and made the process to fix it easy. As a lower income family with multiple kids needing orthodontic work, this has been a huge weight off my shoulders. I cannot recommend them enough.”

FAQs About Interceptive Extractions

Possibly, but interceptive extractions often reduce the complexity or duration of braces or other treatment in the teenage years.

The extraction itself is performed by a dentist or oral surgeon under local anesthesia, with sedation available if needed. Discomfort is usually mild and temporary.

Many plans cover medically necessary extractions, especially when they are part of a monitored orthodontic plan. We also offer affordable financing options and accept Medicaid.

Interceptive extractions are timed specifically to assist future orthodontic alignment. They are not based on cavities, damage, or emergency needs.

Waiting may allow crowding or misalignment to worsen. Early intervention is about taking advantage of jaw growth and space availability before permanent teeth are fully established.
