Growth and Development Evaluation in Utah

Tracking the Right Time for Orthodontic Treatment

Every child develops at their own pace, and when it comes to orthodontic care, timing is everything. At Utah Orthodontic Care, we provide professional Growth and Development Evaluations as part of our early-phase treatment services to monitor how your child’s smile and jaw are forming.

These evaluations are a key component of Phase I Orthodontics, allowing us to identify potential alignment or bite issues before they become more complex. With regular monitoring, we can recommend the right time to begin treatment—or simply keep an eye on things until intervention is necessary.

What Is a Growth and Development Evaluation?

A Growth and Development Evaluation is a clinical review of your child’s facial structure, jaw growth, and tooth eruption patterns. It includes diagnostic imaging, orthodontic measurements, and periodic assessments that help our team understand if—and when—orthodontic treatment should begin.

During these visits, we evaluate:

  • The timing and sequence of permanent tooth eruption
  • Development of the upper and lower jaws
  • Early signs of bite issues such as crossbites, overbites, or underbites
  • Spacing or crowding concerns
  • Impact of oral habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting
  • The need for interceptive treatment or appliances

If a problem is identified, we may recommend early intervention through space maintainers, palatal expanders, or habit appliances.

If everything is progressing normally, we’ll simply continue with scheduled evaluations every 6–12 months.

When Should My Child Begin Evaluations?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, the mix of baby and permanent teeth makes it easier to detect early issues. Even if no immediate treatment is needed, beginning evaluations now ensures we’re ready to act if problems arise later.

Children who may particularly benefit from early evaluations include those who:

  • Lost baby teeth early or late
  • Show signs of jaw shifting or asymmetry
  • Have difficulty chewing or biting
  • Exhibit prolonged oral habits
  • Experience speech difficulties related to bite or tongue position

If your child’s dentist or pediatrician has noted any of these signs, scheduling a free orthodontic consultation is a smart next step.

What to Expect at a Growth and Development Evaluation

Each visit is designed to be comfortable, informative, and child-friendly. A typical appointment may include:

  1. Review of dental and medical history
  2. Digital X-rays or 3D imaging to assess tooth and jaw development
  3. Photos and measurements of the face, bite, and dental arches
  4. Discussion with parents about observations and future recommendations
  5. Personalized monitoring plan, including how often to return for checkups

We take a conservative, observation-first approach and only recommend treatment when there’s a clear benefit to early intervention.

“This clinic is AWESOME! Everyone is so friendly and the doctor is great! I’m happy with my teeth and you really can’t beat the price! Great services and low pricing! I would recommend everyone to come here! Also they are always doing patient appreciation events that are so fun! Bring your kids, your spouse, your friends, your neighbors, BRING EVERYONE!”

“Great orthodontics! I got my braces at UOC and they’ve been so amazing! First appointment is free, they’ll evaluate your teeth and talk to you about braces option options and prices/ plans. My dental insurance did not cover braces for adults ( I chose not to when I made my plan ) and even if I switched my plan I don’t think it would be a nice affordable plan like UOC offered me with monthly payments … I’m happy with them! They were always nice, friendly and flexible with schedules! Recommend it 100%!”

– Denise A.

“I love this office. The doctor is fun with the kids, very friendly and approachable. The staff is typically very easy to work with and any time we have any question or concern they have been quick to make it right with us. We had a billing hiccup and Lauren was incredibly understanding and made the process to fix it easy. As a lower income family with multiple kids needing orthodontic work, this has been a huge weight off my shoulders. I cannot recommend them enough.”

FAQs About Growth and Development Evaluations

If no immediate treatment is needed, we typically recommend visits every 6 to 12 months to track changes and ensure proper timing for future care.

We offer free consultations and will provide a treatment plan only when necessary. Evaluations are often covered by insurance or Medicaid when part of early orthodontic monitoring.

We’ll discuss all options with you, which may include interceptive appliances, limited braces, or space & growth management tools. Treatment decisions are always based on what’s best for your child.

Not always—but early monitoring and intervention can make future treatment shorter, simpler, and more effective.

Most evaluations begin around age 7, but even older kids and teens can benefit from an orthodontic growth assessment if there are concerns about spacing, jaw alignment, or tooth eruption.
