Removable Orthodontic Plates in Utah

A Flexible Solution for Early Orthodontic Needs

Removable orthodontic plates offer a simple and non-invasive way to guide tooth movement, support jaw development, and maintain space in growing smiles. At Utah Orthodontic Care, we use these custom appliances during Phase I Orthodontic Treatment to make small, targeted changes that prevent more significant orthodontic problems later.

Unlike braces, removable plates can be taken out during meals and for cleaning, giving younger patients more freedom and comfort while still supporting proper dental development. These appliances are commonly used in children between ages 6–12 as part of a proactive treatment plan that encourages balanced growth and prevents the need for extractions or more extensive corrections.

What Are Removable Orthodontic Plates?

Removable plates are custom acrylic appliances fitted to a child’s upper or lower dental arch. They may include springs, wires, or screws to apply light pressure and reposition individual teeth or preserve space for incoming permanent teeth. These plates are worn for a specific number of hours per day and adjusted periodically by the orthodontist.

At Utah Orthodontic Care, we use removable plates to:

  • Make minor tooth corrections
  • Expand narrow arches
  • Maintain spacing after early tooth loss
  • Guide erupting teeth into proper positions
  • Assist with bite development
  • Support treatment from other appliances like habit appliances or space maintainers

Because these plates are easy to clean and wear, they are especially helpful for young patients who are still learning to care for their teeth.

What to Expect from Treatment

Each plate is uniquely fabricated based on impressions of your child’s mouth. After the appliance is made and fitted, your child will need to wear it according to the orthodontist’s schedule—usually between 14–22 hours per day.

Here’s how the process works:

  1. Initial consultation and imaging to evaluate your child’s dental needs
  2. Appliance design based on the treatment goal (space holding, expansion, minor alignment)
  3. Fitting appointment, where the plate is inserted and instructions are given
  4. Routine checkups every 4–6 weeks for progress monitoring and adjustments
  5. Transition phase, where the appliance is gradually phased out or replaced with a retainer

To ensure results, children must follow instructions for wear and care. We provide guidance and support at every stage to make this as easy as possible for families.

When Are Removable Plates Recommended?

Removable plates are typically used in the mixed dentition stage (when baby teeth and adult teeth are both present). Your child may be a candidate for a removable plate if they:

  • Have minor spacing or crowding
  • Lost baby teeth early and need space preservation
  • Show signs of a narrow upper arch
  • Need minor corrections to prepare for Phase II orthodontics
  • Would benefit from interceptive alignment before full braces

They are often used alongside other appliances like crossbite correction devices or as part of growth and development evaluations.

“Great orthodontics! I got my braces at UOC and they’ve been so amazing! First appointment is free, they’ll evaluate your teeth and talk to you about braces option options and prices/ plans. My dental insurance did not cover braces for adults ( I chose not to when I made my plan ) and even if I switched my plan I don’t think it would be a nice affordable plan like UOC offered me with monthly payments … I’m happy with them! They were always nice, friendly and flexible with schedules! Recommend it 100%!”

– Denise A.

“I love this office. The doctor is fun with the kids, very friendly and approachable. The staff is typically very easy to work with and any time we have any question or concern they have been quick to make it right with us. We had a billing hiccup and Lauren was incredibly understanding and made the process to fix it easy. As a lower income family with multiple kids needing orthodontic work, this has been a huge weight off my shoulders. I cannot recommend them enough.”
