Guiding Orthodontic Development With Strategic Monitoring
The Observation Phase is a vital part of comprehensive orthodontic care, especially during Phase I treatment. At Utah Orthodontic Care, this phase allows our expert orthodontic specialists to closely monitor a child’s dental and facial growth after early intervention—before they are ready for full corrective appliances like braces or Invisalign.
Rather than rushing into unnecessary treatments, we take a conservative approach. During the Observation Phase, patients return for periodic check-ins, allowing our team to assess jaw development, tooth eruption, and spacing changes over time.
This proactive monitoring ensures that if further treatment is needed, it begins at the right time—making care more efficient and effective.
What Happens During the Observation Phase?
After a child has completed early intervention—such as space maintainers, habit appliances, or interceptive extractions—we enter the Observation Phase to let natural growth and eruption continue.
During this time, your child will:
- Visit our office every 6 to 12 months for growth and alignment evaluations
- Receive imaging or bite assessments if needed
- Be screened for changes in tooth position, spacing, or bite alignment
- Be monitored for readiness to begin Phase II Orthodontics
Our team keeps detailed records so we can detect even subtle shifts and act promptly if new appliances, like holding appliances or limited braces, become necessary.
Why the Observation Phase Is So Important
Timing plays a crucial role in successful orthodontic outcomes. Starting braces too early or too late can lead to longer treatments, avoidable complications, and less predictable results.
Benefits of the Observation Phase include:
- Ensuring that permanent teeth have erupted in the correct sequence
- Identifying potential jaw growth imbalances as they emerge
- Preventing the need for extraction or jaw surgery later
- Tracking space closure after early treatments
- Reducing the risk of relapse from earlier interventions
For many families, this phase provides peace of mind that progress is continuing without rushing into braces before the child is ready.
Who Needs the Observation Phase?
The Observation Phase is typically recommended for children who:
- Have completed Phase I treatment but are not ready for full corrective appliances
- Show signs of future alignment issues but do not yet require intervention
- Have undergone growth and development evaluations
- Need regular supervision to determine the ideal start time for Phase II treatment
Even if no formal treatment has been done yet, some patients enter the Observation Phase after their early alignment checkups show they may eventually benefit from orthodontics.
Hear It from Our Patients
Our customers love our service! Here are some of their glowing reviews:
“This clinic is AWESOME! Everyone is so friendly and the doctor is great! I’m happy with my teeth and you really can’t beat the price! Great services and low pricing! I would recommend everyone to come here! Also they are always doing patient appreciation events that are so fun! Bring your kids, your spouse, your friends, your neighbors, BRING EVERYONE!”
“Great orthodontics! I got my braces at UOC and they’ve been so amazing! First appointment is free, they’ll evaluate your teeth and talk to you about braces option options and prices/ plans. My dental insurance did not cover braces for adults ( I chose not to when I made my plan ) and even if I switched my plan I don’t think it would be a nice affordable plan like UOC offered me with monthly payments … I’m happy with them! They were always nice, friendly and flexible with schedules! Recommend it 100%!”
“I love this office. The doctor is fun with the kids, very friendly and approachable. The staff is typically very easy to work with and any time we have any question or concern they have been quick to make it right with us. We had a billing hiccup and Lauren was incredibly understanding and made the process to fix it easy. As a lower income family with multiple kids needing orthodontic work, this has been a huge weight off my shoulders. I cannot recommend them enough.”
