Why It’s Important to Go to the Dentist Every 6 Months

February 21, 2020|

At Utah Orthodontic Care, we’re proud to help make it affordable and accessible for patients all over Salt Lake City to achieve a new smile through orthodontic care. But braces and Invisalign aren’t the only aspects of keeping up a great smile: maintaining regular appointments with a dentist is critical, as well. And if you’ve ever wondered why it’s necessary for you to see a dentist every 6 months, we’d love to shed some light on the issue.

The Importance of Dental Check-Ups

Generally, the dental check-up you go to once every 6 months consists of two parts: a dental exam and a teeth cleaning. These procedures serve different functions, but they’re both critical to maintaining a healthy smile.

During your dental exam, your dentist will perform a thorough, detailed evaluation of your teeth, gums, tongue, and mouth, as well as take diagnostic records like photos or x-rays. This exam is critical because it allows your dentist to spot and diagnose any problems that may be developing like cavities or gingivitis. By scheduling a dental exam every 6 months, your dentist is able to spot developing problems before they get too serious, making it easier to treat them and bring your smile back to normal.

The second part of your appointment is a teeth cleaning. This involves a dental hygienist using specialized tools to do a “deep cleaning” of your teeth, removing any buildup of plaque, bacteria, or calculus. Your dental hygienist can clean areas of the teeth you can’t effectively clean at home, and they use tools that provide a more thorough cleaning than brushing and flossing. All in all, this eliminates plaque and helps prevent the development of tooth decay in the long run.
