Do I Need a Special Mouthguard for Sports if I Have Braces?

April 20, 2026|

Yes. Traditional “boil-and-bite” mouthguards are not designed for braces and can actually cause problems. They may stick to brackets or restrict natural tooth movement during treatment.

Athletes with braces need a special orthodontic mouthguard made from high-grade silicone. These are designed to protect your lips and cheeks from impact while still allowing teeth to move safely during sports like mountain biking, soccer, and lacrosse.

Why Standard Mouthguards Don’t Work With Braces

Store-bought mouthguards are made to fit tightly around teeth—but with braces, that tight fit can interfere with treatment.

Common issues include:

  • sticking to brackets and wires
  • limiting tooth movement
  • increased risk of damage during removal
  • discomfort during extended wear

Orthodontic mouthguards are different. They are designed to sit comfortably over braces while providing flexibility and protection where it matters most.

Built for Active Utah Lifestyles

In Northern Utah, staying active is part of everyday life. From mountain biking along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to competitive sports in Weber and Davis counties, athletes need gear that can keep up.

High-speed trails, uneven terrain, and contact sports all increase the risk of oral injury. A braces-friendly mouthguard helps absorb impact and prevent:

  • cuts to lips and cheeks
  • broken brackets or wires
  • treatment delays due to injuries

For patients in North Ogden, Roy, and Layton, having the right protection means you can stay focused on performance—not dental emergencies.

Why Custom Protection Matters

While over-the-counter options may seem convenient, they often fall short for athletes with braces.

A properly fitted orthodontic mouthguard offers:

  • better comfort during long activities
  • improved airflow for endurance sports
  • consistent protection without interfering with treatment
  • durability for repeated use

For serious athletes and active patients, that difference can be significant—especially during high-intensity spring sports seasons.

Expert Insight for Student Athletes

At Utah Orthodontic Care, patients benefit from providers who understand both orthodontics and athletic performance.

Dr. Jared C. Jesperson (“Dr. Jay”), a dentist with extensive experience in orthodontics and a background in sports dentistry, has worked closely with athletes and understands the unique demands of staying active during treatment. His experience helps guide patients toward solutions that balance protection, comfort, and performance.

What Happens if You Don’t Wear Protection?

Skipping a mouthguard during sports can lead to avoidable issues, including:

  • broken brackets or bent wires
  • cuts inside the mouth
  • emergency visits and treatment delays

If an issue does happen, it’s important to know how to respond. Learn more about handling urgent situations here:

Stay Protected This Spring

Spring sports season is one of the busiest—and most active—times of the year. Whether you’re riding trails, competing on the field, or training outdoors, protecting your smile should be part of your routine.

Keep your smile safe while you stay active. Ask about braces-friendly mouthguards at your next appointment in Roy or North Ogden, or call (801) 999-4431 to learn more.

With the right protection, you can focus on the trail ahead—not your braces.
