The Dangers of DIY Orthodontics

December 9, 2017|

At Utah Orthodontic Care, we’re proud to help patients throughout greater Salt Lake City achieve beautiful smiles they feel truly proud of. We offer a range of treatment options for our patients, and we strive to make treatment accessible and affordable to anyone. Unfortunately, though, there’s a disturbing new trend of people trying to “save money” on a new smile by trying DIY orthodontics. While it may seem like a clever trick, the truth is that DIY orthodontics isn’t just ineffective – it’s incredibly dangerous.

What Are DIY Braces?

DIY orthodontics – also known as DIY braces – is the practice of trying to move your teeth by using various materials to “simulate” braces. Usually, it involves tying twine or rubber bands around your teeth, attempting to apply pressure that moves them to new positions. At first blush, it may not seem like a problem. But trust us: it is.

Why Are DIY Braces Bad?

The problem with DIY braces is that they simply aren’t finely calibrated enough. Modern braces are an engineering marvel, relying on an advanced understanding of the mouth and bone structure that’s been achieved through nearly a century of technological advancement. Orthodontic treatments use this knowledge and technology to apply precise, finely-calibrated forces to the teeth. Over time, these forces gradually influence the teeth to move, producing a new alignment and a new smile.

DIY braces, on the other hand, offer only crude, blunt force. The teeth shift positions in response to this force. What’s worse, DIY braces can crimp blood vessels that supply the tooth roots, cutting off oxygen. With enough time, this lack of blood will cause the tooth to die and eventually fall out. That’s right: DIY braces can literally cause you to lose your teeth!
