When Should I Start Orthodontic Care For My Child?

November 14, 2020|

A common question we receive when parents are considering their kid’s braces is, “When should I start orthodontic care for my child?” This is a great question and we’d like to explore some of the facts surrounding early treatment and how to know when to begin orthodontic care.

The Earlier the Better

Let us first explore the reasoning and importance behind early treatment. It’s recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists for children to see a child orthodontist by the age of 7. This recommendation is rooted in early detection of issues can lead to early treatment which is critical for your child’s developing smile.

Early orthodontic treatment helps the orthodontist provide an ideal environment for permanent teeth to erupt. With early treatment the orthodontist is able to ensure there is enough room and good jaw formation to avoid issues like protrusion, crowding, crossbite, crookedness, as well as other bite problems.

Your child’s face shape is affected by their jaw development and permanent teeth. Their jaw and teeth can also affect their chewing and impact speech. This is why having your child visit a child orthodontist to learn about kid’s braces and orthodontic care is so important.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Orthodontic Appointment

When we meet you and your child for their first appointment we will do a thorough examination of your child’s mouth and determine what issues are present, if any are present at all. We may also take x-rays or photographs to help the orthodontist create a more accurate picture of your child’s oral health.

After the examination the orthodontist will take time to discuss their findings and determine if and when orthodontic treatment should begin along with answering any questions or concerns you may have.
