Early Intervention for Proper Jaw and Tooth Alignment
A crossbite occurs when the upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth when biting down — often affecting either the front teeth, back teeth, or both. Without treatment, crossbites can lead to jaw growth issues, uneven tooth wear, and long-term functional problems. At Utah Orthodontic Care, we use a range of crossbite correction appliances as part of Phase I Orthodontic Treatment to guide young patients toward proper bite alignment during their formative years.
Early detection and correction of crossbites are key to supporting normal facial development and preventing more complex interventions later. Our experienced orthodontists customize treatment based on each child’s age, growth pattern, and dental development stage.
What Is a Crossbite and Why Does It Matter?
A crossbite can affect one or multiple teeth and may involve either the front (anterior crossbite) or back teeth (posterior crossbite). This misalignment can stem from:
- Abnormal jaw growth
- Narrow upper jaw
- Retained baby teeth or early loss of primary teeth
- Delayed eruption of permanent teeth
- Habitual behaviors like thumb sucking or mouth breathing
If left uncorrected, a crossbite may cause:
- Asymmetric jaw growth
- Uneven tooth wear or enamel erosion
- Gum recession
- TMJ discomfort
- Difficulty with chewing or speaking
The earlier this condition is identified, the more easily it can be treated using interceptive orthodontics, including functional appliances or palatal expanders.
Types of Crossbite Correction Appliances We Use
At Utah Orthodontic Care, we offer several appliances to correct crossbites depending on the location and severity of the misalignment:
- Palatal Expanders
These fixed or removable devices gradually widen the upper jaw to correct posterior crossbites caused by a narrow palate. They are commonly used in younger children while the jaw is still developing. - Reverse Pull Headgear (Facemask)
This appliance gently pulls the upper jaw forward, often used in skeletal crossbite cases where the upper jaw is underdeveloped. It may be combined with an expander or distalizers for comprehensive correction. - Lower Lingual Holding Arch with Expansion
In some cases, we may modify space maintainers like the lower lingual holding arch to support molar alignment and jaw development as part of crossbite management. - Anterior Bite Plates or Inclined Planes
For anterior crossbites, removable or fixed appliances are used to help reposition the front teeth by guiding the bite into the correct position.
Each of these options is tailored to your child’s orthodontic needs and may be integrated with other treatments like limited braces or habit appliances if necessary.
Our Early Approach to Crossbite Management
Our team believes in a proactive, growth-focused strategy. Here’s how we approach crossbite treatment:
- Early Evaluation: We recommend a first orthodontic exam by age 7 to detect bite issues.
- Customized Planning: Each appliance is chosen based on your child’s age, growth potential, and severity of the crossbite.
- Ongoing Monitoring: During treatment, we provide regular checkups to adjust appliances and monitor jaw development.
- Growth-Based Guidance: Our orthodontists incorporate developmental monitoring to guide your child through every phase of their dental maturation.
By intervening early, we often reduce the need for surgical correction or prolonged treatment during the teen years.
What Our Patients Say About Us
Our customers love our service! Here are some of their glowing reviews:
“This clinic is AWESOME! Everyone is so friendly and the doctor is great! I’m happy with my teeth and you really can’t beat the price! Great services and low pricing! I would recommend everyone to come here! Also they are always doing patient appreciation events that are so fun! Bring your kids, your spouse, your friends, your neighbors, BRING EVERYONE!”
“Great orthodontics! I got my braces at UOC and they’ve been so amazing! First appointment is free, they’ll evaluate your teeth and talk to you about braces option options and prices/ plans. My dental insurance did not cover braces for adults ( I chose not to when I made my plan ) and even if I switched my plan I don’t think it would be a nice affordable plan like UOC offered me with monthly payments … I’m happy with them! They were always nice, friendly and flexible with schedules! Recommend it 100%!”
“I love this office. The doctor is fun with the kids, very friendly and approachable. The staff is typically very easy to work with and any time we have any question or concern they have been quick to make it right with us. We had a billing hiccup and Lauren was incredibly understanding and made the process to fix it easy. As a lower income family with multiple kids needing orthodontic work, this has been a huge weight off my shoulders. I cannot recommend them enough.”
